Besuch des Opel Zoos in Kronberg * A visit at the Opel Zoo in Kronberg
Dieser Zoo wurde im Jahr 1955 aufgrund einer Initiative von Georg von Opel gegründet. Er beherbergt fast 1.400 Tiere und rund 200 Arten von überall auf der Welt. Er ist einer der wenigen Orte, wo noch afrikanische Elefanten gehalten werden. Direkt am Eingang wird man von einer Statue des Zoogründers begrüßt.
This zoo was established through an initiative of Georg von Opel in 1955 and is the home of nearly 1,400 animals and around 200 species originating from all over the world. It is one of the few places that still has African elephants. Visitors are greeted at the entrance by a statue of the founder.
Das erste große Gehege ist so angelegt, dass es der afrikanischen Savanne ähnelt. Seine Bewohner sind Giraffen, Zebras, Gnus und Antilopen. * The first huge enclosure is set up to resemble the African savannah. Its inhabitants are giraffes, zebras, gnus and antelopes.
Und da war es auch schon - mein Highlight des Tages: die Giraffen. Ich verliebte mich sofort in sie und verbrachte einige Zeit damit, sie zu beobachten. Dies war auch der Ort, wo ich mein Lieblingsbild des heutigen Besuchs machte - zwei junge Giraffen, die eng aneinandergekuschelt waren.
And there it was already - my highlight of the day: the giraffes. I fell in love with them instantly and spent quite some time watching them. This was also the place where I took my favorite picture of today's visit - two young giraffes tightly cuddled up.
Es gibt Futternetze mit Heu, die hoch oben für die Giraffen aufgehängt wurden - aber auch frische Äste mit grünen Blättern zum Knabbern. * There are "feeding nets" with hay set up for the the giraffes - but also fresh branches with green leafs for them to nibble on.
Es gab zwei kleine Giraffen. Eine davon konnte ich bei der Interaktion mit der Mutter beobachten. * There were two little giraffes. I could witness one of them interacting with its mother.

Und von den Älteren. * And of the older ones.
Die lustigsten Bilder des Tages waren wohl diese beiden, weil eine Giraffe aussah, als würde sie ganz lässig eine Zigarette rauchen. * The funniest pics of the day have to be these two, because this giraffe seemed to be playing it cool with what looks like a cigarette.
Im gleichen Gehege leben Gnus. * Gnus are living in the same compound.
Wie auch Zebras. * As well as zebras.
Ein Familie von Zwergmangusten lebt im Nachbargehege. Ihre Verwandtschaft zu den Erdmännchen ist offensichtlich. * A family of dwarf mongoose lives in a neighboring pen. They are related to the meerkats and it shows.
Einem der beiden Rundwege folgend, kam ich zu den Elefanten. * Following one of the two loop roads I arrived at the elephants.
Ein Elch, der im Schatten döste. * An elk dozing in the shadow.
Ein freches Reh. * A cheeky deer.
Jemand verfütterte Leckereien - man kann deutlich die Begierde auf dem Gesicht dieses Rehs erkennen. * Someone was feeding the smaller deer some treats - you can clearly see the look of eagerness on this one's face.
Die Emus sind direkt nebenan. * The emu pen is direktly next door.
Neben dem Pfad saß ein Tier, das nicht wirklich Teil des Zoos, aber trotzdem wunderschön war. * Next to the path sat an animal that was not exactly part of the zoo but nevertheless beautiful.
Überall gibt es auch kleine Vögel, vornehmlich Spatzen. * There are small birds all over the place, mainly sparrows.
Aber auch diesen großen, farbenfrohen Vogel. * But also this big colorful bird.
In einer Voliere befinden sich alle möglichen Wasservögel - inklusive eines schwarzen Storches. * In an aviary were all kinds of water fowl - including a black stork.
Kleinere Vögel stibitzen das eigentlich für die Enten gedachte Futter. * Smaller birds were taking advantage of the duck feeder.
Nachdem ich die Voliere verlassen hatte, traf ich den wohl hässlichsten - und stinkigsten - Bewohner. * Coming out of the aviary I came across the probably ugliest inhabitant - and it was quite stinky, too.
Von einem Aussichtspunkt auf einem Hügel hat man einen fantastischen Blick über die Frankfurter Skyline. * From a vantage point up on a hill there is a terrific view of Frankfurt's skyline.
Die Lamas sahen sehr plüschig und kuschelig aus. * The llamas looked very fluffy and cuddly.
Als ich um eine Ecke kam, bot sich mir dieses Bild. * Coming around a corner I came across this scene.
Das Ganze stellte sich dann als sehr schläfriger Roter Panda heraus. * It turned out to be a very sleepy red panda.
Fast wieder am Ausgangspunkt angekommen, sah ich diese beiden Trampeltiere. * Nearly back at my starting point the last animals I saw were these two Bactrian camels.
