Dom St. Peter in Worms * Cathedral of St. Peter in Worms
Ich war heute ein bisschen in Touristen-Laune, daher beschloss ich, den Dom in Worms zu besuchen - einen der ältesten in Deutschland. Das Licht im Dom ist sehr gedimmt, wie es sich für ein Gotteshaus gehört, daher haben einige Bild ein ziemlich hohes Level an Rauschen. Dafür möchte ich mich entschuldigen, aber mein Hauptanliegen war es, zu zeigen, wie prachtvoll der Innenraum ist.
Feeling a bit touristy today I decided to visit the cathedral in Worms - one of the oldest in Germany. The light inside the cathedral is kept at a minimal level, as is appropriate for a house of prayer, therefore some pictures have a high level of noise. I apologize for that, but my main concern was to show the splendor of the interior.
Eine kurze Beschreibung, wie sie auf der Homepage des Wormser Doms zu finden ist:
"Von der alten Wormser Basilika aus fränkischer Zeit ist heute nichts mehr erhalten. An ihrer Stelle erhebt sich der romanische Kathedralbau von St. Peter, der unter Bischof Burchard im 12. Jahrhundert erbaut und 1181 n.Chr. endgültig eingeweiht wurde. Das Hauptportal zum Wormser Dom befindet sich an seiner Südseite und ist ein Meisterwerk der gotischen Bildhauerkunst. Im Bogenfeld dieses Portals ist die himmlische Krönung Marias durch ihren Sohn Jesus Christus dargestellt.
Im Inneren des Wormser Doms sieht man, dass dieses Gotteshaus - genauso wie der Mainzer Dom - an beiden Längsseiten in einen Chorraum mündet: Während der Ostchor als Ort des Bischofs und des Domkapitels die geistliche Macht der mittelalterlichen Welt symbolisierte, diente der Westchor als Sitz der weltlichen Macht, des Kaisers. Die Kaiserliche Pfalz , die nicht mehr erhalten ist, befand sich neben dem Dom, und die Kaiser, die sich in Mittelalter und früher Neuzeit oft in Worms aufhielten, konnten durch Verbindungstüren direkt in den Dom gelangen.
In das Mittelschiff des Wormser Doms wurde ein neues Orgelwerk eingebaut, dessen Klänge nicht nur bei den Gottesdiensten, sondern auch in vielen Orgelkonzerten bewundert werden können.
An der Südseite des Wormser Doms ist im 13. Jahrhundert eine gotische Kapelle angebaut worden, die dem hl. Nikolaus geweiht ist. Man kann diesen Heiligen im Bogenfeld des Portals zu dieser Kapelle sehen: Als Patron der Schiffsleute bewahrt er mit der einen Hand ein Boot mit Seeleuten vor dem Teufel, während er als Retter der zu Unrecht Verurteilten mit der anderen Hand dem Schwert eines Henkers Einhalt gebietet."
Vor dem Dom steht eine Statue von Bischoff Burchard I. und segnet die Besucher.
Here is a short description taken from the website of Sacred Destinations:
"The origins of Worms Cathedral go back to early Christian times. The first Bishop of Worms was Berthulf, in 614 AD; his cathedral was much smaller than the present one.
Under Burchard (1000-25), the most notable Bishop of Worms, a new Romanesque cathedral was built on the site. It had similar measurements to today's cathedral and some of the original parts survive. The cathedral was a burial place for the Salian royal family, who had a castle in Worms well into the 11th century. These can still be seen in the crypt.
A century later, Burchard's building was replaced by the present cathedral, an even more splendid High Romanesque structure. The east section was the first part to be built, in 1125-44. The nave was constructed 1160-70 and the chancel was mostly completed by 1181, when the cathedral was consecrated. The west end was the last to be built, at the end of the 12th century.
During the Middle Ages, numerous visits from the Emperor and many important events, some with serious political consequences, took place in the cathedral and it surroundings.
Around 1300, the Nikolaus Chapel in the cathedral was replaced with a Gothicchapel and the south portal was re-carved in an impressive Gothic style. A Late Gothic cloister was carved with scenes from the life of Jesus around the end of the 15th century; these now stand in the north nave.
In the late 17th century, after the town was badly damaged during wars against the French, a Baroque high altar by Balthasar Neumann was added to the cathedral."
In front of the cathedral the statue of Bishop Burchard I. blesses the visitors.
Normalerweise betreten Besucher den Dom durch den südlichen Eingang. * Usually visitors enter through the south portal.
Der nördliche Eingang - der 1689 zerstört wurde - war der Schauplatz einer Szene aus dem Nibelungenlied. Die rivalisierenden Königinnen Krimhild und Brünhilde stritten sich darüber, wessen Ehemann der Mächtigere wäre. Dessen Frau dürfte dann nämlich als Erste den Dom betreten. Dieser Streit ist einer der Hauptgründe, die später zu Siegfrieds Tod und dem Untergang der Nibelungen führten.

The north portal - which was destroyed in 1689 - was the place of a scene from the Nibelungenlied. The rival queens Kriemhild and Bruenhilde fought over the rank of their husbands Gunther and Siegfried. The wife of the higher ranked husband would be allowed to enter the cathedral first. This dispute is one of the key factors that lead to Siegfried's death and the destruction of the Nibelungs.

Nachdem man eingetreten ist, sieht man als eines der ersten Dinge eine kleine Statue des Namensgebers - St. Peter. * After entering one of the first things you see is a small statue of the patron saint of the cathedral - St. Peter.
In seiner Nähe steht eine bronzene Halbkugel mit einem Kreuz darauf. Ich vermute, dass es sich hierbei um ein Taufbecken handelt. * Close to him there is a bronze half-bowl with a cross on its highest point. I assume it might be a baptistry.
Es gibt entlang der Wände auch noch einige Weihwasserbecken. * Several sandstone stoups can be found along the walls of the cathedral.
Nachdem die Stadt während des Krieges gegen die Franzosen im 17. Jahrhundert schwer beschädigt wurde, fügte man dem Dom einen Barock-Hochaltar von Balthasar Neumann hinzu. Die Pracht dieses Altars und die Vielfalt der Details ist unglaublich und einfach wunderschön anzusehen. * After the city was badly damaged in the late 17th century due to the war against the French a baroque high altar by Balthasar Neumann was added to the cathedral. The splendor of this altar and the variety of details is incredible and absolutely beautiful.
Ich glaube, man könnte Stunden vor diesem Altar verbringen und trotzdem immer wieder neue Dinge entdecken, die man zuvor nicht gesehen hatte. Zum Beispiel die Putten... * I think you could spend hours in front of that altar and still discover things you did not see before. For example the putti...

Und die überbordende goldene Pracht, die den Altar umgibt... * And the abundance of gilded splendor surrounding the altar...
In einer der Seitenkapellen hängt diese Ikone zu Ehren des Gemeindemitglieds Rosa Bertram. Aufgrund ihrer jüdischen Herkunft, war sie im März 1945 ermordet worden. * In one of the side chapels is this icon in honor of the parishioner Rosa Bertram. Due to her Jewish descent she was murdered in March 1945.
Ebenfalls in einer der Seitenkapellen steht die Statue dieses Mannes, der einen Affen auf dem Rücken hat. Angeblich handelt es sich hierbei um den verantwortlichen Maurermeister. * Also in one of the side chapels you can find this statue of a man with a monkey on his back. Supposedly it depicts the head mason.
Überall im Dom gibt es wundervoll geschnitzte hölzerne Ornamente... * Everywhere in the cathedral are beautifully carved wooden ornaments...
... und farbenfrohe Wandmalereien. * ... and colorful murals.
Natürlich ist die Decke auch bemalt. * Of course the ceiling is painted too.
Das Buntglas der Fensterrosen, die sich über dem westlichen Chorraum befinden, sind unglaublich detailliert. Die Originale waren 1943 während eines Bombenangriffs zerstört worden. Die jetzigen Fenster waren zwischen 1965 und 1995 von dem Mainzer Künstler Alois Plum angefertigt worden. Ein interessantes Detail ist, dass die Hauptrose von außen größer erscheint, als von innen. * The stained glass rose windows above the west choir are incredibly detailed. The original ones were destroyed during a bombing in 1943 and were restored between 1965 to 1995 by Mainz artist Alois Plum. An interesting fact is that the main window seems larger on the outside than on the inside of the cathedral.
Natürlich sind auch all die anderen Buntglasfenster, in all ihrer farbenfrohen Pracht, unbedingt sehenswert. * Of course the other stained glass windows are a sight to see too in all their glorious detail.
Entlang der Wände des Doms gibt es viele Wandreliefs. * There is a multitude of mural reliefs along the walls of the cathedral.
Einige davon sind sogar aufwändig mit Wappen oder Inschriften geschmückt. * Some of them are even more elaborate and depicts coats of arms or inscriptions.
Es gibt auch viele Statuen, die erstaunlich detailgetreu sind. * There are also many statues that are amazingly detailed.
Vor dem westlichen Chorraum war dieser - mit Ketten abgesperrte - Bereich. Es handelt sich hier um eine Sandsteinplatte mit einer Inschrift. * In front of the west choir was this chained off section with an inscription on the floor.
Im westlichen Chorraum selbst stand immer noch die Krippenszene von Weihnachten. * Within the west choir itself there was still the nativity scene from Christmas.
Die geschnitzten Holzfiguren, die sich in der Krippe befinden, wurden mit einer faszinierenden Liebe zum Detail gefertigt. * The carved wooden figures that populate the scene are made with an amazing attention to detail.
In der Nähe des westlichen Chorraums gibt es diese Tür, die ein farbenfrohes Mosaik über dem Türrahmen hat. * Near the west choir there is a door with a colorful mosaic above its frame.
Ganz in der Nähe steht ein wunderschönes Modell der Fensterrose. * Close-by is a beautiful model of the rose window.
Abgehend vom südlichen Säulengang befindet sich die Nikolauskapelle. Dort gibt es wunderschöne Buntglasfenster und ein Taufbecken, das aus Sandstein gefertigt wurde. * Off the south aisle is the Chapel of St. Nicholas. Inside there are beautifully stained glass windows and a sandstone font.
In einer Ecke des Doms steht - halb versteckt - ein römischer Altarstein. * In a corner of the cathedral stood - half hidden - a Roman altar stone.
Die Krypta des Doms ist die letzte Ruhestätte von Konrad I (Herzog von Kärnten), Konrad II (Herzog von Kärnten), Konrad (Herzog von Lothringen), Heinrich von Speyer und Königin Matilda (Gemahlin von Henri I von Frankreich und Tochter von Konrad II). * The crypt of the cathedral is the final resting place of Conrad I (Duke of Carinthia); Conrad II (Duke of Carinthia); Conrad (Duke of Lorraine); Henry of Speyer and Queen Matilda (consort of Henry I of France and daughter of Conrad II).
An mehreren Stellen im Dom kann man - gegen eine kleine Spende - Kerzen anzünden. * There are several places where you can light candles in exchange for a small donation.
Nach dem Verlassen des Doms, sah ich mich im Außenbereich noch ein wenig um. Dann macht ich mich auf den Weg in Richtung Wormser Museum. * After leaving the cathedral I looked around its exterior for a bit, before going for a little walk towards the museum of Worms.
Am Ende der Stufen, die vom Dom hinabführen, steht ein Haus, auf dessen Außenfassade dieses wundervolle Mosaik angebracht wurde. * Just down the cathedral's steps there is a house with this beautiful mural painting.
Auf meinem Weg kam ich an diesem schmiedeeisernen Tor vorbei. * Along the way I came across this gate made of wrought iron.
In einer kleinen Kirche fand ich ein weiteres Buntglasfenster - dieses jedoch aus der eher neueren Vergangenheit, wie man unschwer an der Inschrift erkennen kann. Außerdem gab es hier auf dem Altar eine Bibel, die Besucher zum Lesen einlud, der Abdruck eines Kreuzes in einem Sandsteinpfeiler und zwei schöne gotische Fenster, die in die Wand eingelassen waren.
In a small church I found another beautiful stained glass window - this one not really old though as you can tell by the inscription. There was also a bible on the altar that invited visitors to read in it, the imprint of a cross in sandstone and two nice gothic windows that were set into the wall.
An der Fassade des Wormser Museums hing diese Drachenskulptur. * On the wall of the museum of Worms was this dragon sculpture.
Im Innenhof des Museums stand dieser verrückte Vogel aus rostigem Metall. * In the courtyard of the museum stood this weird bird made of rusty metal.
Ins Museum selbst ging ich dann doch nicht, das hebe ich mir für einen anderen Tag auf. Auf dem Rückweg fiel mir diese Wetterfahne ins Auge. Wie sich herausstellte, gehört sie zur Dreifaltigkeitskirche. * I ended up not visiting the museum today. I will postpone that to some other day. On my way back this weather vane caught my attention. As it turned out it belongs to the Trinity Church.
