Eine Wanderung durch den Pfälzer Wald * A hike through the Palatinate Forest
Ich begann meine Wanderung oberhalb von Haardt, einem Ortsteil von Neustadt an der Weinstraße, weil mein ursprüngliches Ziel das Schloss Winzigen und die dazugehörige Burgruine Haardt waren. Leider fand an diesem Tag dort eine Hochzeit statt, weshalb ich improvisieren musste und mich zu einem Besuch der Wolfsburg entschloss, die oberhalb der Stadt liegt.
I started my hike above Haardt, a district of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, because my original destination had been Winzingen Castle and the adjoining Haardt Ruin. Alas, there was a wedding on that day, therefore I had to improvise and so I decided to visit the Wolfsburg which is located on a hill above the city.

Die Wege, die durch den Wald führen, sind wundervoll ruhig und friedlich. Der Wald selbst scheint - trotz seiner relativen Nähe zur Stadt - ziemlich ungezähmt zu sein. * The tracks through the forest are wonderfully quiet and peaceful. The forest itself seems to be - despite its relative closeness to town - pretty much untamed.
Während der Wanderung gibt es zwischen den Bäumen oftmals die Gelegenheit, Ausblicke auf das Tal und die umliegenden Hügel zu werfen. * During the hike there are often opportunities to catch glimpses of the valley and the neighboring hills.
Kurz nach Beginn meiner Wanderung kam ich an diesem Monument vorbei. Es scheint eine Ode an Rheinland-Pfalz und seine Weinkultur zu sein. * Shortly after I started the hike I came across this structure - it seems to be a monument that is meant to praise Rhineland-Palatinate and its wine culture.
Jemand hatte die Hand der Fatima auf die Wand in einem der Spitzbögen gemalt - der Grund dafür ist unklar. Dieses Zeichen wird oft als Schutz gegen das Böse angewendet. * Someone had painted the Hand of Fatima on the wall in one of the pointed archs - the reason for that is unclear. That sign is mostly used as a protection against evil.
Entlang der Wege findet man des Öfteren Sandsteinblöcke, in die Markierungen gemeißelt wurden. * Along the trails there are often sandstone blocks with engravings.
Schöne Dinge findet man oft an unerwarteten Orten. * Beautiful things can often be found in unexpected places.
Überall im Wald findet man große Sandsteinfelsen - einige kann man besteigen, aber aufgrund der Steilhänge kann das ein sehr gefährliches Unterfangen sein. * Throughout the forest are giant sandstone boulders - some of them can be climbed but due to the steep hills that can be quite dangerous.
An der Wolfsburg angekommen sah ich, dass die Flagge gehisst war. Das bedeutet, dass die Burg für Besucher geöffnet ist. Zwischen dem 1. März und dem 30. Juni ist das nicht der Fall, der Grund ist, dass man der Natur während dieser Gelegenheit geben möchte, sich ungestört zu entwickeln. * Arriving at the Wolfsburg I saw that the flag inside was up - which means that it is open to visitors. Between March 1 and June 30 this is not the case to allow the local fauna a rest period inside the walls of the castle.

Der Burghof ist fast gänzlich von einem Meer aus farbenfrohen Wildblumen bedeckt. * The courtyard is mostly covered in a sea of colorful wildflowers.
Für diejenigen, die dem Pfad, den ich genommen habe folgen möchten - das ist das Zeichen, nach dem ihr Ausschau halten müsst. * For anyone who wants to follow the trail I took - this is the sign you need to look out for.
Auf dem Rückweg kam ich an diesem Brunnen vorbei, der sich auf einer Lichtung befindet. Er ist eine willkommene Möglichkeit für Wanderer, sich zu erfrischen. * On the way back I came across a fountain in a clearing - a welcome chance for refreshment during a hike.
Dies ist nur eine von vielen möglichen Touren durch den Pfälzer Wald. Sogar mitten im Sommer spendet er Schatten - und trotz der vielen Wanderer (und Mountain Biker), die die Wege nutzen, kann man leicht vergessen, dass die Zivilisation sehr nah ist. * This is just one of many available tours throughout the Palatinate Forest. Even in the summertime it will provide shade and even though a lot of hikers (and mountain bikers) use the trails it still is easy to forget that civilization is very close.
Ich habe einige Bilder in Schwarz-Weiß geändert. Ich liebe es, wie sich die Szenerie durch das Fehlen von Farbe verwandelt. * I changed some pics to black and white. I love it how the scenery changes with the absence of color.
